Guided Reading and Book Bags

Exciting news!! We have started our Guided Reading groups today!

Some students will be bringing home a book in their book bag that we practiced reading in our small groups this morning.  We focused on pointing to the words as we read and using the picture to help us figure out a word we don't know.  Normally, your child should be able to read their Guided Reading book independently at home.  This week, we are just getting our feet wet and getting into the routine so your child might need some assistance pointing to the words as they read.  I have included a special pointer in the book bags. :)

Long fingernails are quite useful... ;)

Please take some time to have your child read their Guided Reading book to you.  If your child gets stuck on a word, help them figure it out by looking at the pictures for clues and modeling how to sound out words.  We are still at the very beginning stages of reading, so building independence in reading strategies will allow us to grow as readers!

Here is what you will see in your child's book bag.

Yellow paper: Book log to keep track of the books sent home
Blue paper:  Tips for parents

Book: Fire Truck

Please let me know if you have any questions about our Guided Reading time and/or book bags!

Daily Five

Today I want to tell you a little more about Daily Five!  The five components of Daily Five allow students to be actively engaged in their learning alone or with a partner.  This is a time when I pull small groups for Guided Reading, so it's important that the students are independent in their activity, but still purposefully completing an activity.

The first component that I teach my students is called Read to Self.  This is where we learned that there are three ways to read a book.

During our Read to Self time, we know that we should be reading the whole time.  We practice our stamina each day by seeing how long we can read quietly.  The books that the students read at this time are the books they brought to school at the beginning of the year.  They have also gotten books that we've read together to keep in their book basket.  As Guided Reading goes along, your child will be receiving books at their reading level to bring home to read to you.  They will also have books to choose from in our classroom that are at their independent reading level to read at this time.

The second component of Daily Five is Read to Someone.  This is just like Read to Self, but we get to share our books with our partner!  This is a great way for students to practice their fluency as they become better readers.  Have your child tell you how to sit during Read to Someone!

Our next component is called Listen to Reading.  During this time, students get to use the iPads, the computer, and the CD player to listen to stories being read to them.  This is a great way to build fluency.  The more kids hear fluent reading, the more fluent they become!

The last two components focus on words and writing.  Word Work activities are given to students to practice the words we are learning that week.  Sometimes they use play-doh to build the word, sometimes they play a game to practice reading the words.  Whatever the activity is, it's always focused on the sight words.  Work on writing is similar, but more focused on the writing of words.

This Word Work activity is a beginning of the year activity.  The students match uppercase and lowercase letters.

This Work on Writing activity is also for the beginning of the year.  Students spin a letter and practice writing it's uppercase and lowercase form.

Our Daily Five time happens each day from 8:20-9:00.  Children get to complete each 'Daily' 1-2 times per week.  This is an amazing opportunity for your child to become more independent in their learning, but also a time when I can meet with smaller groups of children for more focused learning.

As always, please let me know if you have any questions about our Daily Five/Guided Reading time!

Morning Meeting

Hello!

I wanted to take some time to talk about things we do in our classroom on a daily basis.  Our first topic is Morning Meeting. During Morning Meeting, our class works at building a team culture by saying good morning to each other, playing a class game/activity, sharing important news, and reading a morning message. This is my favorite time of the day as we learn more about each other!

Saying 'Good Morning' jellyfish-style!

Going BANANAS during a class activity!

Filling in the class message

Have your child tell you about our Morning Meeting!
